Fairfield and Russell Brand

Maharishi University in Fairfield

I just got the news that the British comedian/actor/writer, Russel Brand, is visiting my home town Fairfield, Iowa.

If you have not been to this amazing little town in the middle of nowhere, you would never believe that there would be any reason for anyone who was not born there to go there. But this is such a cool town, so out of place in the middle of the Iowa cornfields, that it is a mind expanding experience.

Over the years there have been a long list of illustrious visitors including foreign Presidents, renowned scientists, famous actors, musicians and artists. The town has spawned several large companies and its economic success motivated the Iowa Governor to call it Silicorn Valley…

The unique ingredient that has been a great force in generating such an impressive community was the purchase of the old Parsons College campus in 1974 by Maharishi’s University and its relocation from California. This brought people from all over the world to study everything from physics to computer science, business, biology and art and of course to practice Transcendental Meditation together.

The result is a community with a strong focus on self-development and creative pursuits. The university has pioneered many of Maharishi’s programs and was the first in the US to offer a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Living and is the host to the annual David Lynch Weekend.

The town itself counts with a variety of restaurants, art galleries, theater productions and coffee shops unimaginable in a farming town of 10,000. And to cap it off, just north of Fairfield a new town was created called Maharishi Vedic City which has incorporated anci

ent knowledge from the Vedas of India in its city planning and architechtural design. Vedic City is also home to one of the world’s premiere health resorts, The Raj, which has been host to many celebrities and guests from all over the world.

So I should not be surprised to hear that Russell is back in my home town, particularly since he was there just las fall to learn Transcendental Meditation. Yet, I find it exciting to know that he chose our little town as the place to go to work on his second book and find his creative inspiration. Not to mention that in doing research for this I also found out that Russell is working on a movie with Oliver Stone about enlightenment. In that regard Fairfield is no doubt one of the best places in the world to be…

Keep Well and Enjoy…
