A rose at my door…

Dutch Sunrise

It has been a sweet day for me today… lots of little moments that added together make for a most enjoyable treat…

It started with the wonderful greetings that the sun is bestowing upon Holland these days. Its the type of sunshine that convinces you all on its own that life is beautiful. That is one of the things that I love about living in a place with seasons, there is a freshness to spring that is unbeatable, it enlivens something in you and gives a magic to life. Its like being witness to a miracle.

With that kind of start to the day, how can it be anything but wonderful, and so it was… in little ways… the little ways that count.

Mazinaw Lake Night Sky

***

In the evening I got a chance to go swimming… there is this amazing pool where we go and swim outdoors in the night. The water is warm and no matter the weather outside (we have gone when its snowing) its just magical. Tonight I was laying in the water with my head towards the sky and just admiring the universe a little. There is something so calming about floating there in near silence with the body hardly weighing you down and looking off into the stars…

I was reminded of a similar yet infinitely more profound experience I had a few years back. It was early summer in Fairfield and my brother Matthew and I went off to a friend’s pond for some night swimming. It was one of those clear sky’s that are so amazing there because there is just no other light to conflict with the stars and its so flat that you get 180 degrees of sky.

We started swimming and at one point I found myself floating and looking up at the stars. The sky was reflected so perfectly upon the water that the stars were everywhere that the eyes could see… Out of the corner of my eyes I noticed that when I moved my arms, it looked as though I was creating waves in the universe. My ears were submerged in the silence of the water and my eyes were fixed upon the sky and for a little while, that night, I had the universe running though my fingers. It felt so real on every level that I was convinced that, for that night, my eyes were just a couple of the stars in the sky witnessing the universe reverberating within itself…

Its so wonderful that even with only a small taste of that feeling, I can remember so well how it felt to be so unbounded, so full of bliss.

This evening I was told a story, the details of which I cannot share… but it gave me cause to think that we should never forget its lesson. we see life through so many different glasses, sometimes clearer, sometimes very stained. And while we do our best to analyze each situation and generate the right response, there may always be things bellow the surface that we cannot possibly see. We often hear the saying ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover” and it is meant to remind us that not everything in life is as it seems.

But I thought tonight, in light of that story, that it is important to remember that we never know who is at the gate. We should be thoughtful to always treat each guest with dignity and respect because we never know how that one experience with us will change their life and in many cases even our own.

There are the most amazing, interesting and powerful of people walking around us camouflaged in the most unexpected ways, and we never know where they will be one day where they can lend us a hand or close the gate on us…

Of course, as you might suspect from my happy mood tonight I also got a chance to spend some time with Margarita… which on its own would have made the day most wonderful… (please do click on the link because otherwise you wont get this part of the post at all…)

Finally, upon arriving at my room with all the great blessings of the day, there was a rose on my door. There was no name attached to it nor a note of any kind.. So I can only say thank you with my heart full of gratitude, to whoever so blessed me tonight, for caping off a most delightful day…
